Things You Need to Know
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this safe to do at night?
Yes. Our guides are highly trained in night navigation, canyoneering, and wilderness safety. Each guest is equipped with a headlamp, harness, helmet, and personal attention to ensure a safe and controlled experience, even after dark.
Do I need previous rappelling or canyoneering experience?
Not at all. No experience is required. Your guide will provide clear instruction and support for every rappel and will tailor the route to match your group’s comfort and skill level.
What if I am nervous about the dark or heights?
It is completely normal to feel a little nervous. Our guides specialize in helping guests build confidence and move at their own pace. The quiet calm of the night and the support of a private group often help guests overcome those initial fears.
What will we see in the night sky?
Depending on the moon phase and cloud cover, you may see the Milky Way, planets, constellations, and shooting stars. We operate in areas free of artificial light, offering some of the best stargazing in the Southwest.
What should I wear and bring for a night canyoneering trip?
Wear layers that keep you warm after dark, sturdy closed-toe shoes, and bring water and a small backpack. We provide all the technical gear and lighting, and your guide will let you know what to expect based on the season and weather.
How difficult is this trip physically?
Dark Sky Canyoneering is rated moderate, with hiking distances ranging from 0.75 to 2 miles and elevation gain up to 400 feet. If you are comfortable walking on uneven terrain and can manage a few short climbs, you will do great.
Is this a private tour?
Yes. All of our trips are private, meaning your experience is built around your group’s pace, goals, and comfort level. No strangers, no pressure, just you, your guide, and the night sky.
What makes this different from a daytime canyoneering trip?
Night transforms the canyons into a peaceful, almost otherworldly setting. Without the heat and crowds of the day, you get to experience the thrill of rappelling under the stars and the rare stillness of the desert at night. It is unforgettable.
