The Storm & The Bathrobe

Traversing the park was a battle. We were hit by a storm so fierce that a single gust of wind was enough to tip over our loaded-down bikes (with us still on them!) into the ditch. Rain and wind prevailed for two days until, exhausted and soaked, we finally pulled into the Hidden Valley Campground—the home of the esteemed climbers.

And there he was.

My first sighting of my future husband wasn’t a slow-motion movie moment. It was a young man making a mad dash from a shabby old motorhome to the community pit toilet. He was wearing a grey bathrobe and matching neon orange beanie and Crocs.

We were drenched. He had a dry RV.

We met Nathan, a welcoming hippy climber, in the middle of that torrential downpour. He invited Taryn and me into his 28-foot motorhome to wait out the rain.

A Dirtbag Cinderella Story

I had been dying to climb in Joshua Tree, but carrying climbing gear on a long-distance bike tour was out of the question. I had resigned myself to just watching from the ground.

But then, the magic happened. Nathan mentioned he had found a pair of climbing shoes. He brought them out. I tried them on.

They fit perfectly.

It was a true dirtbag Cinderella story. (To this day, they remain my favorite climbing shoes; the OGs are long gone, but I order a replica pair every few years). The clouds cleared, the rock dried, and my climbing career began.

Today, we’re throwing it back to 2014. It’s a story about a bicycle, a motorhome named Sir Crag-A-Lot, and a very specific prophecy made to a National Park Ranger.

The Plunge

After our backpacking trip and the depletion of Nathan's already meager life savings, we parted ways again. I continued my bike tour to San Francisco, and Nathan stayed in the desert, working odd jobs remodeling a house for a new friend to build up some cash.

But the magnet had already been turned on.

When my tour unexpectedly ended early near San Francisco, I called Nathan in a panic. I had no money to leave the city and no desire to stay. Nathan and Sir Crag just so happened to be cruising up the interstate, windows down, Dr Hook blaring through the speakers, and golden locks blowing in the wind, just an hour from where I was stuck. He permitted me to place my stinky, dirty gear and my stinky, dirty self into the RV, and we headed toward a new adventure.

Nathan had decided to face his uncertainty about water and become a white water raft guide. I joined him. We spent that summer guiding on the Wenatchee River in Leavenworth, Washington—a lazy mountain town turned Bavarian-themed tourist destination.

His Side of the Story: Hitting the Road

Here is how Nathan remembers our move to the desert, taken from our 2014 Christmas letter:

"August rolled around and the water began to trickle. We figured we were due for another adventure, so we packed up and hit the open road, headed east to Utah. With the promise of work, 5 national parks, and seemingly limitless rock, I was not one to oppose. And what an adventure it was. After 4 flat tires, a serpentine belt, a thermostat, a radiator flush, a front hub assembly, and a mysterious overheating engine that turned out to be a stuck brake caliper, so add two brake assemblies to the list, we arrived in Utah. If ever a state could be worth all that trouble, this is it. We’ve just begun to scrape the top of this state sized, world class, outdoor playground.”

Between the broken down vehicles, the endless public lands, and scrounging a living together out of Sir Crag-A-Lot, we built a life. And now, after 12 years, not much has changed. We’re still just scraping the surface of adventure in our Utah home and holding everything together with zip ties and a prayer. In 2014, I went searching for a life partner with the belief that if you’re resigned to a mediocre life, you will find someone else who is doing the same thing. But if you’re taking the risk to lean into your dreams, you’ll find those people who are stumbling down that same path in search of the best that this one short life has to offer.

The Canyonlands Lesson: Why We Need to Stop Following and Start Thinking

I was recently on a personal trip deep in Canyonlands National Park. My team and I had found a route on a blog that looked incredible. It was aggressive, sure, but the photos were stunning, and the narrative was compelling.

We were sold. We packed up and headed out.

On the second day on the trail, we started to realize something strange. There was a team in front of us performing the exact same route. On our last night, another group came in behind us, also following the exact same itinerary.

It was jarring to realize that we were just one part of a stream of people who had all been influenced by a single blog post. We had walked into a digital echo chamber that had manifested in the real world.

The Pivot

Ultimately, we looked at our team, our gear, and the sun dipping low in the sky. We deemed the route too aggressive for our current reality. While we agreed we’d love to tackle it someday, a successful and safe attempt would require lighter gear, higher fitness levels, and more hours of daylight than we had right now.

This was the moment of truth.

We could have let Influence drive us ("The blog said we should do this, so we have to push through"). Instead, we used Information and critical thinking. We admitted the aggressive itinerary was over our heads.

We modified the route on the fly. We ended up camping in a nearby valley that wasn't on the "must-do" list.

Why I Always Give the Gift of Adventure

Together, Dad and I have hiked Rim to Rim in the Grand Canyon, rafted for five days on the Wild and Scenic Rogue River, backpacked through Rocky Mountain National Park, and trekked the world’s longest slot canyon, Buckskin Gulch ( which we now guide with All Ways Adventure! ). We’ve shouldered packs into the glowing sandstone of Neon Canyon ( another All Ways Adventure favorite ), and explored dozens of other wild, beautiful places. Sometimes we bring friends and family, but even if it’s just the two of us, we’re perfectly happy to lace up our boots and head out together.

Last May, Dad and I floated the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon on a guided rafting trip, checking off one of his lifelong bucket list goals. Then in October, my brother, Dad, and I spent three nights in the Yosemite Backcountry to summit Half Dome—a trip where my brother and I shared our love of rock climbing and peak bagging with Dad.

When I first started guiding, I never expected my Kansas-born, NFL-loving, meat-and-potatoes dad to become my most loyal adventure buddy. It’s humbling to be recognized for this effort, even though the easy response is to deflect the praise. But the truth is, our objectives—mine and my dad's—have grown in grandeur simply because we’ve been consistent in showing up, which is always the hardest part. I try to run a business that implores our staff to treat their guests like family, and I lead by example: everyone deserves that moment, perched on the side of Half Dome with the ones they love, to just revel in the glory of it all. We only get one short life to live, and there is no time to waste in getting after your dreams.

Somewhere in the middle of the silence, I realized something crystal clear: attention is our most valuable commodity. And I don’t just mean in a meditative sense. I mean in the most literal, modern, economic sense—our entire economy is engineered to capture and monetize your attention.

And here’s the kicker: I’m in that business, too.

Capturing Attention in Business

My role at All Ways Adventure is to entice you to book a trip with us. I spend my days thinking about you—who you are, where you are, what you’re doing, and how to get you to stop scrolling and click “Book Now.” I’ve read research from companies with budgets bigger than the GDP of small countries about how to capture our target market’s attention. I’ve counted the number of times you click before reserving a trip with us and I’m working to make that number smaller. I’m adding more videos to our website and social media. Building a better FAQ page. Hiring a team to tweak copy to get us to page one of the Google search results.

I wonder—are you reading this on your phone at work? On your couch with a laptop? Would you prefer a phone call or would that annoy you? What time zone are you on? Are you sleeping or having dinner with your family? Do you want an All Ways Adventure business card at the end of your trip? A follow-up email? Do you want to read about how we employ Leave No Trace principles on our trips, or do we have to prove it to you by buying brand new electric vehicles? What would make you say, “Yes, here’s my credit card” before bouncing to a shinier company’s site?

Attention as a Gift

But here’s my confession: all of this effort isn’t so you’ll just book a trip. It’s so we can give you something infinitely more valuable—your attention back. To give you the chance to calm your mind, to take your first rappel and feel your fear turn into exhilaration, to look around at a canyon older than we can conceive of and realize you are part of something vast.

It feels urgent to me that the future depends on giving each person a chance to learn, in Mary Oliver’s words:

how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.

Noticing the Commodification of Attention

The first step to paying attention is noticing. Noticing when you’re being commodified. I once heard—and I believe it to be true—that there are no free apps. If you didn’t pay for the app, then you are the product. Your attention is what’s being sold to advertisers desperate to wedge their product into your awareness.

We are dynamic, complex, one-of-a-kind beings, yet we allow ourselves to be boiled down to Netflix watchers and McDonald’s customers. It takes conscious, deliberate effort to break free from the traps that mega-corporations have set for us.

I recently spent ten days at a Vipassana meditation course, where, for twelve hours a day, my sole job was to turn my attention inward. No phone. No talking. No distractions. Just me, my body, my thoughts, and my awareness. Vipassana—sometimes called “Insight Meditation”—is an ancient technique that teaches you to notice what’s happening within you, without reacting with craving or aversion. The practice is deceptively simple: sit still and observe your breath, your sensations, and your mind. Repeat. For 10 days.

And here’s the truth: being told to pay attention isn’t enough. You have to experience it yourself. That’s what we offer at All Ways Adventure. Not shiny gimmicks, not clickbait—just real moments in wild places, where your attention becomes yours again.

We also cut our winter firewood and Christmas trees from the surrounding forest—always responsibly and with permits. That helped reduce fuel loads and, in some small way, supported the forest’s health. My grandfather was the first to take me to the Grand Canyon when I was in my early twenties. His ashes rest at the base of a tree that now stands in the path of the fire.

My love for the Grand Canyon is so deep that it shaped the entire course of my life. It’s where I have spent years guiding, hiking, rafting, canyoneering, getting lost, getting unlost, and returning again and again with people who have also felt the canyon’s unyielding pull. I find an immediate safe haven in people who profess to love the Grand Canyon—because if you know how to love the Grand Canyon, you know how to love me.

There is worry, too. We are thinking about the lodge staff, the firefighters (some of whom are dear friends), and the small businesses in this region whose seasons have been turned upside down. Outfitters running Rim-to-Rim trips, shuttle services, and lodges like Jacob Lake Inn and Kaibab Lodge—so many livelihoods are being impacted in ways that will be felt for years.

Even so, we try to hold onto perspective. Because the White Sage Fire was already burning and threatening the only access road to the rim, the lodge had been evacuated before the Dragon Bravo Fire unexpectedly and suddenly advanced. The loss could have been so much worse.

The loss of the North Rim Lodge has left a deep ache in our hearts. This is not just about a building. It is about a place woven into memory, ritual, and reverence.

If you’ve been on a hike with us, there’s a good chance you’ve met Wren. She’s our four-legged team member and a beloved part of the All Ways Adventure family . We adopted Wren as a puppy six years ago, and ever since, she has been growing into the perfect backcountry companion.

Adventure Training—One Paw at a Time

Wren’s First Backpacking Trip—Reflection Canyon

One of our favorite memories with Wren was her very first backpacking trip when she was just ten months old. It was during the early days of the COVID-19 shutdown. We were instructed to shelter in place, which in our case meant staying within Kane County. Fortunately, Kane County is an extraordinary place to explore, so we packed our bags and headed out to Reflection Canyon. (Yes, we guide this location. Ask us about it!)

Wren had just finished rattlesnake aversion training. On the hike in, she suddenly froze and alerted to something in the sand. It wasn’t a snake, but a lizard, and we were pretty impressed. The training seemed to have made an impression.

We made it to the overlook in time to snap some photos of Reflection Canyon and pitched our tent just before a big storm rolled in. It was Wren’s very first night in a tent. At one point the wind flattened the tent completely over us. Thunder echoed across the canyon. Lightning lit up the sky. Through it all, Wren curled up against us and weathered the storm like a trooper. Not a single bark or whimper.

Her training has been deliberate and consistent from the very beginning. We’ve eased her into each new challenge rather than expecting her to be a perfect hiker, swimmer, or canyoneer on the first try. That same philosophy is how we guide our guests, providing enough of a challenge to build confidence, but never more than someone is ready for.

From Muck Hole to Mountain Storm—A Backcountry Baptism

Not long after that, we realized we had a bigger issue. Water was scarce, and Wren had just located the only visible source for miles: a swampy cow pie muck hole. Before we could stop her, she was in it, splashing around like it was a spa day. She emerged soaking wet and absolutely reeking, and very, very proud of herself. One thing was clear. She was not sleeping in our tent that night.

So we changed course in search of a real water source. The hike took us off the main route as we scanned for potholes deep enough to hold water. Despite recent rains, everything looked dry. We were starting to worry. Eventually, after a good amount of wandering, we came across two large potholes. One for filtering our drinking water, and one for washing the dog. Success.

It was COVID times, so after her "bath," we even rubbed her down with hand sanitizer. She was not amused. But she was at least slightly more tolerable, and we continued on toward camp.

When First Impressions Fail: A Wilderness Lesson in Humility

Many years ago I was fortunate to guide one of my most memorable trips with a dear friend as my co-guide, Jen. To set the scene, here were the notes in the reservation system:

No known fear of heights or tight spaces
Need an easy start to the day, ease them in slowly for the kids (practice slab?)
No relevant medical history
Some prior rock climbing experience
Rachel is described as very shy and a bit bigger for her age
The youngest, Levi, is 4 (almost 5, they say) and had a small tantrum during booking
Family may require a higher level of attention
Kids are not very communicative

Okay, I thought, this is going to be a handful. Jen and I had just finished a mellow morning trip with a large Dutch family—super easygoing. In stark comparison, we were gearing up for what looked like a complicated situation. Jen had met the afternoon group the day before and mentioned that the parents were highly involved and the kids seemed a little shy and disengaged. My expectations were low, and I was bracing for a rough ride.

A Moment of Cultural Uncertainty

The family arrived. All the girls were wearing long skirts, and the boys had traditional sidecurls. I realized quickly this was an Orthodox Jewish family. As we greeted them, I had a moment of cultural uncertainty—would helmets fit? Can we get harnesses over the skirts? Would handshakes be appropriate? Would I accidentally offend someone? I offered my hand to the father, who politely declined, and I instantly realized I had a lot to learn.

Trying to be respectful and inclusive, I asked the mother if there were any physical contact preferences or religious boundaries we should be aware of so we could be sure to honor them. She appreciated the question and clarified: we should avoid touching her two older sons unless safety was at risk. We could work with that.

Meeting the Kids Where They Are

We drove out to Lamb’s Knoll and began gearing up. To my amazement, the kids—skirts, curls, yarmulkes and all—got their harnesses and helmets on with ease. The yarmulkes fit just fine under the helmets, and the kids were excited to begin. Once we hiked to the top of the practice slab, everyone except the youngest rappelled down without hesitation. They were absolutely stoked.

The mother, who turned out to have a fear of heights (something missing from the notes), asked to rappel down with her toddler in her lap—and they giggled the whole way down. Her calm, confident presence set the tone for the rest of the day.

At the bottom, a few of the kids asked about doing a bigger rappel. But at that point it was already late in the day, and the little one had a few meltdowns. The parents had managed them beautifully, but Jen and I agreed that descending into a full canyon wasn’t the right call. Instead, we offered them another round on the same rappel, but challenged them to make it smoother and more confident. They loved the idea. On the second run, Rachel—the shy daughter—started chatting and, at the bottom, even shared some homemade kosher protein bites with us, proudly explaining how she makes them at home in Brooklyn.

After we packed up, we walked to the base of Snake Alley and gave the kids a chance to try the squeeze. All of them took a turn, including Rachel, who wriggled through with determination and a smile. When her older brother needed help and we couldn’t offer a hand, one of his sisters stepped up and guided him through.

We chatted about how they cook kosher meals on the road—turns out they bring their own supplies and cook in their hotel rooms. We were all learning from each other. We gave them a five-minute warning, which turned into twenty, but the joy on the kids’ faces as they explored the slot canyon made it easy to stretch the timeline. These kids were thriving. Their confidence was growing with every challenge, and the trust their parents placed in Jen and me felt both humbling and deeply rewarding.

Trip notes are just a starting point. Approach every group with an open heart and a clear mind. You never know what incredible people you’re about to meet.

Moral of the story?

The Magic of the First Rappel

On the drive back, Jen and I debriefed silently at first. We had knocked it out of the park. We stayed adaptable, respected their traditions, and created a safe and empowering experience for the whole family. When we got back, people asked how the trip went, expecting a chaotic story. Instead, I told them honestly: it was one of the best trips I’ve ever had.

The initial assumptions we made based on trip notes and first impressions had missed the mark. We thought it would be difficult; it was delightful. We feared disconnection; we found deep trust. These “shy,” “high-maintenance,” “non-communicative” kids begged us to join their Narrows hike the next day.

I went home with a full heart and a long list of things to Google.

My Journey to Mount Rainier

Hi ya'll! Jillian here, settling back into the office after the adventure of a lifetime. If you've been on a trip with me recently, this is ALL I've been talking about.

I have had my eye on Mount Rainier ever since Nathan and I spent our first summer together in Washington State. I reached out to our friend Steffan Gregory last winter to start putting a team together, which eventually ended up being just the two of us. I knew Steffan just about as well as I knew what climbing Mount Rainier really entailed. In typical Jillian fashion I jumped in with two feet anyway, hoping for the best.⁠

A knee injury last winter was followed by months of PT which was in turn followed by months of All Ways Adventure mowing me down. In the weeks leading up to my departure for Seattle, I started freaking out about how I wanted to be more prepared. Promises of "it's just a hike" from friends who had climbed Rainier before eased my anxiety. I got a brief glimpse of the mountain as my plane landed in SeaTac and the unsettled, uncertain anxiety welled up. ⁠

First Steps Into the Unknown

Steffan did the lion's share of the planning and prep for this trip. After he picked me up at the airport we immediately began working down the list of last minute shopping items. Sleep was restless that night (#*@! mosquitoes!) and the next morning we departed early for Mount Rainier National Park. ⁠

I didn't know it yet, but I was in over my head.

Steffan and I arrived on schedule at Mount Rainier to find a huge line to get in the park. Rookie mistake. Oh well, windows down, music up, cruising through the forest. All was well. Steffan and I barely knew each other, but during our drive to the trailhead, I realized that a friendship was blooming. "That's good," I thought. ⁠

⁠

We picked up the permit, found a parking spot, and threw our packs on. They didn't even feel that heavy...yet. ⁠

The Challenge Begins: Mosquitoes, Doubt, and Heavy Packs

A few miles up the trail I was getting really PO'ed about the mosquitoes. I live in the desert for a reason. The doubt started creeping in again, but some calories at lunch and a quick break helped. ⁠

Suddenly, the casual trail ended and the Inter Glacier was in sight. Mountaineering boots on (I'd only worn these around the house!), ropes, ice axes, crampons, helmets. I felt like I was armed, against my will, with a dozen murderous switchblades that were going to stab me or someone else. Sharp things were sticking off of me in every direction. Or maybe these things wanted to save me? From what? "What did it mean when Steffan said the mountain was really open?" I wondered...⁠

Trudging up the Inter Glacier I became convinced that Steffan had slipped rocks in my pack, I wasn't conditioned enough for this trail, and we would have to turn around. With the speed that I was moving, why would we even bother to make a summit attempt. What would be the point? I was so obviously in over my head! A former colleague was the first one to notice and tactfully point out my negative self-talk. Even though I know about it in the big scheme of things now, I still often miss it in the moment. Steffan doesn't coddle. He reminded me to take it one step at a time and let me be responsible for my own mental battles.⁠

After arriving at camp I nervously inquired, "Do you think that our pace is enough for a summit bid?" Steffan didn't sugar coat it. "We can't go any slower," he said. ⁠

Exhausted, we set up camp, ate some food (miso soup appetizer anyone?!), and settled in. The sunset was magical and we enjoyed a piece of dark chocolate to celebrate Steffan's birthday. Sleep was peaceful that night.

The next morning we woke up at Camp Schurman. The Emmons Glacier stretched out for miles above us. We got out early to get in some snow school before things started to warm up. I'm 100% certain that Steffan prepared me about the timing of things, but I guess I just filed it away in the "worry about it later" folder. Instead of preparing, I learned on the fly. Things basically made sense - we need to be off the glacier before the warmest part of the day to avoid rock fall and to minimize our chances of falling into a crevasse. We came back to camp, discussed more glacier travel techniques, ate lots of food, and endured the guided trips pestering us about our start time. They had plans that were wildly different than ours and appeared to be judgmental about our ideas. Despite the radio static, we agreed to stick to our departure time and "went to bed" early. Like 3pm early. Like the tent was still blistering hot early. Steffan taught me to use the sleeping bags draped outside the tent to insulate from the heat and I laid on my sleeping pad for 6 hours. Sleep never came.

At 9pm we stood up (not to be confused with woke up) and finished up the remainder of our packing for our summit bid. We started off strong, right out of the gate. Covered in sharp things, sporting fragile (and expensive!) clothing, and donning headlamps, we left camp. We departed a few minutes late at 10:15pm and were hitting Steffan's goal of 1000ft an hour. We were going to try for the summit, and our planned turn around time was 6am. Ahead of us lay unfamiliar travel through crevassed terrain covered in these god awful penitentes (more on those later), all in total darkness.

Surprisingly, I felt optimistic and I was moving well. Lots of people have done this, right? Why are they any better than me?

Planning for the Summit Attempt

Battling Fatigue and Mental Walls

Then came the first calorie crash. I didn't feel hungry when we left base camp and totally spaced on the concept that we eat and drink for what we're about to do, not what we just did. So the first hour I was running on a few bites of chocolate. Understandably, I got fatigued. ⁠

At our first stop I ate some food, but failed to put on my puffy jacket. I got very cold, very fast and spent the next hour trying to warm back up. By our second break, I had my system sorted out. All the clothes I had with me were on, snacks were accessible in my pocket, and water was just a huge pain. Eventually it would take whole minutes for me to do some seemingly simple task, like putting my backpack on or zipping my coat.⁠

By our third or fourth break, my focus was oscillating between just a few things - telling myself to step, summoning all my willpower NOT to ask Steffan to take a break, and redirecting my negative thoughts to positive thoughts about all of the outpouring of support that I received for this trip. I won't even attempt to list everyone, but I passed my time thinking about each friend and family member that popped into my head. These photos may depict a team of two on Mount Rainier, but we were several hundred strong. Without these positive thoughts about my loved ones, I would have turned around and I am 100% certain of that. I was carried up the mountain by the good vibes of my community.⁠

Ice Fins, Penitentes, and Vertical Ice: Major Obstacles

Two of the dozens of obstacles really stick out in my mind:

The first, a fin of ice jutting into a behemoth crevasse. The trail felt like walking the line for a sobriety test and if you stumbled, there was a crevasse on one side and a wall with a big, black nothingness behind it on the other. It seemed unreasonable, but the boot path was obvious, so we pushed forward. The fin eventually led to a jump over the crevasse below us and back to a trail, which we proceeded to lose. We found ourselves in a sea of penitentes. These ice "dragon scales" look fragile but were actually quite rigid and would force your feet to face a certain direction. God forbid you start teetering one way or the other because those penitentes were unyielding.

The second obstacle that is burned into my brain was a very short pitch of vertical ice climbing. Fortunately, it seemed very casual to Steffan, so he soloed it and belayed me up. Steffan looked down at me and said something like, "Well, now you'll learn to ice climb," and I swung my axe, kicked my crampons, and went up. Hah.

The Final Decision

6am was our planned turn around time. This was to ensure that we would have time to return to camp before temps caused the ice to soften and get unstable. At 5:50am, we sat down for a team meeting. We knew that the summit had exposed rock, but we weren't sure how much rock hiking there would be before an actual high point. Behind us, the scree stretched out a few hundred feet. We took a moment to meditate on whether it was time to turn around or not. I requested that we keep going, and Steffan agreed to a compromise - we would go as far as the rock that we could see and then turn around. The moment that we realized that the summit was in sight, the water works began. It was so much closer than we thought. We pushed on and stood on the summit of Mount Rainier.

I'm still overwhelmed by my feelings of gratitude (and during a revision for the blog 4 years later, I’m still crying reading this). At the summit, we had time to hug, take a photo, cry and then turn around. I don't remember the view at all. At the summit, of course, we were halfway.

A Dream in the Making

Snow School and Facing Crevasses

Oh yeah, crevasses are a thing I know about now. Eventually we would literally jump across, oh I don't know, 10 or so crevasses. I kept telling Steffan that if there were a photo of me jumping across these crevasses, it could hang in a guidance counselor's office and have a caption that says "commitment" or something cheesy at the bottom. Turns out that the mountain being "open" meant that the snow had melted off exposing the gnarly crevasses underneath. Steffan suggested July for this trip due to the historical July conditions. You might expect crevasses to be covered completely, making it easy to just hike right up. Instead, the Washington heat wave provided us with September conditions. Thanks a lot global warming.

So anyway, we got up and did snow school. After spending years as a canyoneering guide, I know all about getting in and out of deep slots. Granted, when I'm canyoneering I am planning to go into the canyon. Crevasses are just like surprise canyoneering where you're covered with sharp things. Like, you're walking across a snow field and then BOOM, you're free falling into a blue/black ice canyon, hoping that your partner is self arresting so your rope will catch you both. Not ideal, but a workable situation.⁠

Snow school was honestly the biggest confidence boost I got while we were on Rainier. The skills felt obvious and easy and I was certain that I could rescue Steffan or myself as well as a seasoned mountaineer.

Descending Rainier was uneventful. Just like the way up, it was really, really, really hard. The main difference was that it was randomly hard to see because I kept bursting out into tears. I repeated in my mind, and sometimes out loud "thank you for letting us be here" to the mountain. It's obviously not terrain that welcomes human life for any extended period of time. ⁠

On the way down we passed a team that kept saying "You were the two headlamps!" They got a later start than us, so by the time they woke up to begin their summit push, we were already several thousand feet above them with our two headlamps shining into the dark. Seeing us so high on the mountain got them psyched, and I'm sure that the close proximity of their positive vibes lightened my pack for at least few steps, even though I didn't know it until later.⁠

Steffan facilitated a trip that would never have been possible on my own. He went above and beyond what I would ever expect from a climbing partner and changed the way I think about how I participate in that kind of relationship. He was patient and supportive and simultaneously held space for me to be independent and trustworthy. Finding Peace, Gratitude, and a Renewed Self

For me, standing on the summit wasn't about accomplishing a dream or conquering a mountain. It was about bowing down, surrendering to the power and wonder of nature and overflowing with gratitude for the support of my community. None of the adventures I have taken on in my past have provided such an overwhelming feeling of gratitude and humility. When I met my physical limit, the love and support of my community transformed into physical strength and carried me forward. I didn't even know that that was possible. Standing on the summit, surprisingly, I didn't feel proud at all - just grateful. I came home from my trip battered and bruised, but feeling like I was seeing the world in full color for the first time in a long time. On the plane ride home, I killed the battery on my cell phone while spewing notes about future goals, ideas, and loved ones that I need to reach out to. It's like a key was turned and the flood gates have opened. I'm myself. I'm small and fallible and also quite strong and resilient. And incredibly lucky.

If you've ever been on a guided trip with me, I had a goal for you, whether you knew it or not. I worked hard to facilitate an experience that would give you the opportunity to do something that you thought you couldn't do. The self doubt is so challenging, but without it there is nothing to overcome and no chance to feel this high. Everyone's Mount Rainier is different, but I hope that just a few times in my career, I can play the role that Steffan played on my trip, that pivotal supporter who gets out of the way so that you can fight your own battles and find your own peace.
